Teaching Philosophy:

At a conference a few years ago I was asked to think of a metaphor for my teaching philosophy: I am a tour guide.  I have amazing discoveries planned for my students; we sojourn through the literature, writing process, vocabulary enhancement, AP testing strategies, and even grammar.  I feel it is important for students to be engaged and enjoy the learning process.  However, no matter how great the academic journey is for kids, unless I get them “on the bus” with me, the journey becomes a moot point, because they won’t be going anywhere.  So, one of my strengths as a teacher is that I motivate kids well and have infectious enthusiasm for learning and literature.  I consider myself a life-long learner and redesign and hone my craft from unit to unit and year to year.  I am not one of those teachers who has been doing the same lessons for the last 20 years.  There are some lessons that I feel I have perfected, but I always try to gage the mood and chemistry of a particular group of students and tailor the lesson to where they are at the moment.  I am a nurturing educator and believe in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: I build self-esteem and self-confidence while still maintaining rigorous standards.
